Galling Resistance

Stainless Steel and Titanium

Galling is a type of wear that occurs when materials that are compressed gainst one another are put into motion that causes friction.

When the compressive forces in conjunction with the forces causing the sliding motion are sufficient then friction creates heat sufficient to weld the materials together. This unintentionally removes material from one material and places it onto the other material.

Galling resistance with Expanite®

Galling is a pervasive problem for stainless steel – even on martensitic stainless steel treated with a standard vacuum hardening – the challenges still exist. The Expanite hardening technology is proven to improve galling resistance. Based on a standard ASTM G98 galling test on AISI316, the galling prevention results with the Expanite surface hardening process are remarkable and show that Expanite offers superior solutions to improve galling resistance! The results were remarkable and challenge the conventional wisdom that a ‘hardness differential’ in a material couple is required to resist galling.
