Improving wear resistance with Expanite hardning

The term abrasion or wear resistance refers to the ability of materials and structures to withstand abrasion or wear.

It is a method of wearing down or rubbing away by means of friction. This ability helps to keep the material’s original structure and look. Abrasion resistance resists mechanical wear. Abrasion-resistant materials are useful for both moving and fixed parts in settings where wearing is an issue.

Wear is a common challenge for stainless steel — even martensitic grades, despite vacuum hardening.
Expanite’s advanced nitrocarburizing process changes the game: with surface hardness levels reaching 1200–1500 HV, wear resistance is taken to a whole new level.

In ASTM G133 wear tests, SuperExpanite®-treated AISI 316 showed 168 times better performance compared to an untreated reference.
This impressive improvement comes without applying any coating — only nitrogen and carbon are diffused into the surface, making it up to 10 times harder.

Results from an ASTM G133 wear test show a 168 times improvement in performance when comparing SuperExpanite® hardened AISI316 steel against an untreated reference.
