Titanium Hardening with ExpaniteHard-Ti process
Surface Hardening of Titanium – ExpaniteHard-Ti Increasing Hardness by 5-7x
Surface hardening of titanium in a commercial scale was almost non-existing before Expanite introduced ExpaniteHard-Ti, an interstitial surface hardening process for pure and alloyed titanium. Titanium is known for its light-weight, high-strength and extreme corrosion resistance. However, due to its softness titanium is notoriously known to suffer of poor wear and galling resistance. This is limiting the use of titanium and forcing design engineers to make compromises.
Expanite is changing the game by introducing ExpaniteHard-Ti – a surface hardening for titanium grade 2 and 5 technology. Interstitial hardening or surface hardening of titanium– also known as solid solution strengthening – means that Expanite isn’t changing the base material, simply just introducing hardening atoms during the heat treatment process. This means no titanium nitrides, no coating, and nothing that can spall off the surface! With ExpaniteHard-Ti the surface hardness can reach approx. 800-1000HV, some 5-7 times higher than untreated material, without affecting the corrosion resistance. The effects of the hardness are remarkable when it comes to wear resistance, documented by an ASTM G133 wear test

Benefits of Hardening Titanium with ExpaniteHard-Ti treatment
Surface hardening titanium with ExpaniteHard-Ti ensures that parts experience extended service life even under extreme operating conditions. By precisely controlling the depth and hardness of the surface layer, this treatment minimizes friction and wear, reduces maintenance needs, and improves overall component reliability.
Using ExpaniteHard-Ti, you achieve a wear-resistant surface without compromising the lightweight nature of titanium components, making it ideal for demanding applications in aerospace, medical technology, and high-performance industrial equipment.
Hardening Solutions for Titanium Grade 2 and 5
Expanite’s surface hardening treatment for hardening titanium, include both Titanium Grade 2 and Titanium Grade 5. This advanced treatment ExpaniteHard-Ti significantly enhances the surface hardness while maintaining the mechanical properties of titanium.
ExpaniteHard-Ti has proven its value across multiple industries where titanium components face extreme wear and tear. In aerospace, hardened titanium parts maintain structural integrity while reducing weight, critical for fuel efficiency and performance. In medical technology, surgical instruments and implants made from Titanium Grade 2 and 5 benefit from superior wear resistance and longevity without compromising biocompatibility. Industrial applications, such as high-performance machinery, gain significant operational efficiency, as components endure longer service life and reduced downtime. By selecting surface hardening titanium with ExpaniteHard-Ti, engineers can design lighter, stronger, and more durable components without having to compromise on performance.
Cost-Effective and Reliable Surface Hardening
With the ExpaniteHard-Ti, surface hardening process for titanium grade 2 and 5 components becomes a precise, reliable, and cost-effective process. The enhanced properties provided by the treatment allow manufacturers to reduce material thickness, extend component lifespan, and improve operational efficiency, all while maintaining the exceptional characteristics of titanium.
For engineers and designers seeking durable, lightweight solutions, Expanite’s SHT technology represents a practical and high-performance choice.
Sustainability might be a choice, but with Expanite it´s a given!
Sustainability has since the foundation of the company been close to the hearts of the founders. Not only is the sole purpose of the treatments aimed at extending lifetime of components and systems, the “path” to achieve this life-extending state is more sustainable compared to alternative/competitive products: the ultra-short processing times yielding lowest possible carbon footprint, the lack of chemicals used before & after processing, and the non-toxic-waste processing are all core elements of Expanite’s technology, not a choice!
