Corrosion Resistance

Stainless Steel and Titanium

The term corrosion, derived from the Latin word “corrodere” meaning disintegrate or erode, describes the process by which metal materials react with their surroundings, leading to potential alterations and deterioration of the metal.

This reaction can occur due to various factors, such as exposure to oxygen (resulting in the formation of rust), moisture, or different salts. Corrosion resistance, therefore, refers to the capacity of a metal to withstand external influences and maintain its inertness when combined with other elements. Expanite hardening technology will – unlike other hardening methods in the market – increase the corrosion resistance on your stainless steel.

Corrosion resistant stainless steel with Expanite®

Working with stainless steel has always been associated with challenges no matter what application or industry. Stainless steel, with its excellent corrosion resistance, has the disadvantage that when having steel-to-steel contact, it tends to gall.

Applying coatings such as DLC or diffusion processes such as Kolsterising®carburizing, nitrocarburizing or plasma nitriding have proven effective in counteracting this effect. However, these processes are not only very costly but also generally have a negative effect on corrosion resistance.Loosing corrosion resistance is at risk. Expanite is changing the game: These challenges are now history.

With our advanced processes specially developed for stainless steel, Expanite has overcome this dilemma, using its patented technology to improve corrosion resistance of components during hardening and at the same time make them resistant to wear and galling. Both salt spray and potentiostatic corrosion tests reveal outstanding corrosion resistance of Expanite hardened stainless steel. With Expanite it´s not only about maintaining corrosion resistance, it´s about improving!
